Read the narration

The courtyard

Before the temple Jesus knew, there was Solomon's. Let's begin in its courtyard, with the sanctuary ahead.

1 Kings 6–8

The bronze pillars

Two bronze pillars frame the entrance. First Kings names them Jachin and Boaz.

1 Kings 7:15–22

Worked bronze

Lily-shaped capitals, latticework and pomegranates bring the bronze to life. Their exact appearance remains an artist's interpretation.

1 Kings 7:17–22; reconstruction qualification

The Holy Place

Inside, gold covers the timber. Ten lampstands stand before the inner room, five on each side.

1 Kings 6:15–22; 7:49

Light and carved timber

The lamps draw our eyes along walls carved with palms, flowers and cherubim.

1 Kings 6:29; 7:49

The Most Holy Place

Beyond the doors, two great cherubim spread their wings above the Ark in the Most Holy Place.

1 Kings 6:23–28; 8:6–7

The Ark of the Covenant

Here, the covenant has a physical reminder: the Ark holding the stone tablets Moses placed inside.

1 Kings 8:9
